Happy September!

It has been so hot this season that many of us have just stayed under our coolers, waiting for autumn. And now autumn is coming!

In the United States, autumn, or “fall” means (American) football, Halloween, and Back-to-School. All the department stores have “back to school sales” so that students can return for a new school year dressed their best. Uniforms are not so common in American schools, so moms and kids have to spend a lot of time thinking about what to wear.

Here in Japan, there is a nice long 6 week vacation, but the school year has not finished, so even kids who do not attend school regularly get pounded with homework. Summer vacation and homework are two words that do not go together in an American schoolchild’s vocabulary.

However, this is Japan, and summer means homework. At I CAN, too, the homework crunch has hit hard. In response, the day program members have organized a “Last-Chance, Get-It-All-Done, All-Night, Last-Spurt Study-Marathon” for August 28th and 29th. I CAN supplied the late-night cup ramen and waffle breakfast, and plenty of sharp pencils. The kids brought their workbooks and sleeping bags. Although desk work is not all or even a fraction of an education, it is an important skill and I am proud to say that we all did our best to complete our commitments.

I was really surprised last month when I invited Kudo Iki san from P&J Children’s Village to speak to our local Rotary Club about her program in the Philippines—and she said yes! P&J Children’s Village, which hosted four I CAN members last summer, is a unique “study/volunteer program” which asks the participants to actually take part in the running of an orphanage, in addition to sightseeing and shopping. To ask anyone who experienced the trip last year, it was a life-changing event. Although we didn’t get a group together this year for a summer trip, Iki san has assured me that “special arrangements could be made for I CAN,” perhaps for early next spring.

With the summer months, some I CAN members took time off to be with their families! This is a special time of year when fathers and mothers can take time from work, if only for Obon, and spend time with extended family.
Personally, I was able to spend time with Emiko’s family, and Yuto and Eli, who are already growing up too fast. I encourage the parents who read this letter to make time for your kids, as it is the most valuable gift you can ever give them.

I have also spent some time this summer thinking about our vision for I CAN. Every time I have the opportunity to visit another free school, or talk to a mother whose daughter has quit school, or even networked with other NPO groups, I am re-affirmed in my judgment that I CAN is a necessary entity in our neighborhood. And though I am sure we are headed in the right direction, in no means have we reached our goal.

What is that goal? I want I CAN to be a thriving, educational center. I want I CAN to be a place not only where kids can “hang out,” but also to challenge themselves to be more than they thought they could be, to try new things, fail, and then try again. I want kids here to explore their creativity. I want kids and their families to feel free to visit I CAN, and also free to contribute their time, skills, and life stories. Can you teach a skill or tell a good story? Then I CAN needs you!

In the future, I want I CAN, and other free schools, to be a viable alternative to traditional education in Japan. When some nosy auntie asks, “Why aren’t you in school?” I want our members to proudly say, “I go to I CAN.”

I want parents and grandparents to participate, to teach and enjoy the kids here. I want kids from other countries, too, to find a comfortable place in I CAN when they visit Joetsu

I want kids who come here to learn about how to take care of themselves, to be healthy, independent, and confident in what they can do.

So, there you have one vision for I CAN. As a supporting member, I want to ask you, too: What is your vision for I CAN? What can we accomplish together? What do we want for our kids today, and for the adults of Joetsu, tomorrow?

Won’t you help me by spending 10 minutes “Imagineering” the future of I CAN? This is a part of the community that you can have an impact on, a part of the future of Joetsu that we can build together. Just write what you hope I CAN will become, and I will share it at our next committee meeting.

And finally, your day-to-day support is still needed. When you make a donation or renew your membership to I CAN, we can offer more life-enriching experiences to our kids for less. And as you know, in a young family, every little bit helps. Please invest in the future by using the enclosed Postal Order form. I will mail out last year’s slide show on DVD to all members who renew by October 20th.

Thank you always for your generous support.
